Football season is just around the corner, but if the moment of kick-off feels too far away, or you’re craving the sound of the crowd and the amazing display of sportsmanship, a great film could be just what you need to hold you over until your team plays. The five movies below represent all that you love about the sport that makes giants out of ordinary men.

Rudy (1993)

This inspiring film follows Rudy Ruettiger, an average man from a steel mill town, who dreams of playing football for the University of Notre Dame. People say Rudy is too small to play and doesn’t have the grades to attend Notre Dame, but he heads to Indiana anyway and works hard, making his way onto the team. His determination, persistence, and love for the game inspire his teammates to ask the coach to let Rudy play in the final game of the season. Rudy inspires all people to do everything possible to achieve their dreams.

Little Giants (1994)

Little Giants features another set of underdogs, this time pint-sized. Star Rick Moranis gathers a team of kids who aren’t stellar or typical football players, including his daughter Becky. In addition to leading his little team to victory, Moranis’s character wants to show his football-star brother that he can do it! This cute movie is perfect for the whole family, teaching great lessons about what’s possible when least expected.

Remember the Titans (2000)

This movie quickly became a football-film classic. Based on a true story, Coach Herman Boone comes to work for a football team in a Virginia school that has just been desegregated. As their fearless leader, Boone has to lead the team through racism, and instead, towards acceptance and victory as a united group. This movie will show you how well football levels the playing field, especially when other areas of life are pretty uneven.

Friday Night Lights (2004)

First a nonfiction book by H.G. Bissinger and later a TV series, there’s no doubt that the story behind Friday Night Lights is an inspiring one. The 1988 Permian High School football team in Odessa, TX make an impressive run for state championships. Beyond amazing footage of football, this movie highlights small town life, the loyalty of a team, and how pressure operates. But be warned: It’s a tearjerker!

The Blind Side (2009)

This film tells the story of real-life professional player Michael Oher. From his impoverished upbringing to his adoption by Sandra Bullock’s character and her husband, to the trials of college football, and finally becoming a first-round pick in the NFL, Oher and others display the work ethic and belief necessary for achieving anything in football and in life. The film was nominated for Best Picture, and it won Sandra Bullock her first Oscar for Best Actress in a truly stellar performance.
